Itching for a romance

Today I was browsing our library's online catalog in order to find a good quality historical romance (something Jane Austen-ish.) I typed in "regency romance" and was a little startled to discover that 99% of the books in that category were paperback smut. Now I'm a little embarrassed, because quite often when people have asked me what kind of books I like to read I've answered "regency romances." :) I do like a good romance, but not the kind with ripped corsets and heavy breathing. Have any of you read a well-written, clean, and exciting historical romance lately? If not, will someone please write one?!

Hmmmmm...I don't think I can help on that one. I haven't read a good romance in so long. That's funny though about the regency romances!

Have you read Darcy Takes a Wife? It's great. It's a little risque.... but a great romance. It takes on the style of Jane Austen and the plot follows the first few years of the Darcy's marriage. Don't hate me though if it's a little too liberal for your taste... There is some sex in it--they ARE newleyweds after all. :)

This isn't exactly a historic romance, but I just read Stephanie Meyers new book "THe Host", and I loved it! It was much better than her vampire series. Try it, and tell me what you think.

I started "The Host" last night so don't have an opinion yet. I just read "North and South" by Elizabeth Gaskell. I enjoyed it. It is a little later in history than Jane Austen, but very similar. Have you read "Winter Wheat", by Mildred Walker? It is not a romance, but such a good story. I always cry at the end. Not because it is sad but because it is so touching.

I remember being proud when I was a kid that my mother was a writer. She wrote Romance novels. It wasn't until I was older that I picked up one of the books that she enjoyed reading and whoa! It was worse when I was old enough to write one that she had written. GROSS! I'm pretty sure Latter Day Saint Women aren't reading those anymore. And it strikes me as funny that our mom's, who would appear to have been raised in a simpler time, watched soap operas and read all those smutty novels all the time.
Anyway, good luck. After that I decided that romance novels were not for me and haven't even tried to find clean ones.

I'm always open to a good new 'Jane Austen-ish' novel. Let me know when you find one.

I have never heard the term "regency romance"! I had to laugh though when you discovered that it also means something a little risque! I'm sure most people don't know what it means either and if they heard you say it, they probably assumed it was something good, like Jane Austen! How funny though! Thanks for sharing, I needed a good chuckle : ) I don't know if you've read the Twilight series yet by Stephenie Meyer but I enjoyed it. My friend Sally and mom didn't care for them though. Good luck finding something and let us know if you find anything good! I LOVE a good romance.

Jessi, the above comment is from me. I was messing around with my blog and accidently changed my name from Dani to friends! I'm still figuring this stuff out!

So I randomly stumbled onto your blog by blog-surfing through my friends blogs. Anyways, if you are still checking these comments I would recommend Georgette Heyer. You might have already read her's but they are awesome. They're totally clean and completely entertaining. Sorry to crash your blog.
