Own It

Once, when I was a teenager, I was complimented on my posture. I realized early on that if I stood up strait with my shoulders back I automatically felt more confident and capable. Today I realized that good posture can extend to other areas of my life. I've always hesitated to really take ownership of the things I can do because (like I've written about before) I've never felt like the "expert." But in raising my daughters I really want them to accept their talents and to take satisfaction in the things they work hard at. This morning when I was on the phone with one of my friends she commented about how I was organized. I responded by dismissing it and explaining that I'm not nearly as organized as my Mom or Dad. When I hung up it occurred to me that I AM ORGANIZED and I need to own it! I prepare my girls 4th of July outfits in May, I have specific methods and schedules for all of my housekeeping responsibilities, everything in my house has a "place", and I hang all of our clothes in rainbow order. Am I as organized as some people? No-- but that doesn't negate the fact that I am organized. Accepting and "owning" the things I do well isn't pride or vanity. It's just like having good posture.

Good Concept! I think we do get hard on ourselves when people compliment us instead of saying, "Thank You." Keep up the good work! :)

Jessi, sorry to sort of "crash" your blog but I had a question. Do you really hang all of your clothes in rainbow order? Does that mean you put like colors together or you literally go by ROYGBIV? And if you go by ROYGBIV, where do black and white go?
If you do hang all of your clothes in rainbow order then I definately think you should own it!
BTW, I enjoy reading or "crashing" your blog.

Wise advise! I was just thinking the other day that we need to learn how to objectively view ourselves, both our strengths (without becoming haughty) and our weaknesses (without becoming depressed). We can have joy in accomplishment, no matter how small or how large it is. We can have hope that we can turn our weaknesses into strengths! (Ether 12:27)

so true. thank you jessi! i think it's so important to accept compliments. my habit is that when people compliment me on what i'm wearing, i always just volunteer where i got it and how cheap it was.
i just need to zip it and say thank you. :)

Our clothes are in ROYGBIV order with the neutrals at the end. And it's really not as crazy as it seems. :)

Good for you! It is also difficult to not compare yourself to others. I am not organized, but I know I have great strengths too. What I have learned is rather than wish you were like people who have strengths where you are weak, you instead surround yourself with them. So, when you hit that weakness there are several others around you who can help you through it. In that mind set, I need to organize my craft room. Any ideas? Your summer ideas were AWESOME by the way. I can't wait for flag day!!!!!!
