I finally jumped on the bandwagon and watched an episode of Project Runway, and besides the obvious immodesty of some of their designs I was very impressed with their abilities, especially after my recent attempts at sewing. Their creativity, construction ability, and ingenuity astounded me. It got me to thinking about what it would be like to be truly expert at something. I have been blessed with many gifts, but brilliance is not one of them. I think the description "Jack of all trades, master of none" would definitely apply to me. I consider myself functionally mediocre. I can do lots of things well enough to get by, but nothing REALLY well. I am grateful for the abilities I have been given though. Even though I'm not professional in most of my abilities, I am at least proficient. And I do recognize that most of my gifts are more of a spiritual nature (faith, testimony, kindness, humility). I know we are all given the traits and abilities necessary for our individual life experiences, and while I may not be meant for laud and glory in a professional environment, my talents are requisite for the work I have in my little sphere. Maybe functionally mediocre is not bad in my case because it allows me to focus my attentions on a broad spectrum. Maybe what I do realy is "good enough"!

I love it..."functionally mediocre!" Dave and I just had this conversation last night! I feel the EXACT same way.
No way are you functionally mediocre! I lived with you for a week, and you were functionally extraordinaire! Believe you me, not many people could manage a household with four little girls underfoot, and raise those four little girls, with as much grace as you do! I am still in awe of your ability to do so much in so little time, as I think about what I witnessed during my stay with you. You have mad mothering and wifing skills! :)
