Keeping up with the kiddos

When I was a little girl I took piano lessons. But I wasn't the best student, and since I learned by the Suzuki method I never learned to read music. And since I wasn't "successful" as a child I've just always figured that playing the piano wasn't my thing. Until now. McKenna and Lydia are both in piano lessons and they have totally inspired me. I've decided that I'm going to keep up with McKenna and learn all the songs that she does. My first practice session was yesterday. At first it was quite humbling having to struggle with songs my 9 year old can play, but I caught on quickly and can now play them. I figure that in a few years I'll have progressed to the point where I might even be able to play in church.

That's fantastic! If you never stop learning, you will always be young!

Good job! I learned by Suzuki too. Is that why I can't read music? I always thought it was just me. Well, keep practicing!

Yeah Jessi! As your kids' teacher, I'd have to say that I'd be very suprised if all their musical talent came from just your hubby. They're both such quick learners! I'm proud of you! It's very fun and relaxing to just sit and play something. I'll be happy to help if you need it.

That's really cool, Jessi! Playing has been such a blessing to my life. I'm definitely not an accomplished pianist, but I'm really grateful I can pinch hit in Primary or RS if they need me, and I love being able to bring music into my home.

Plus, what an example to your kids about perseverance and the importance of always learning!

I'm going thru the same thing with Leah, except she wants me to teach her, we've done one lesson, and I'm already in over my head! Two thumbs up to you for taking lessons, you're awesome!

I'm so jealous. I've always wanted to learn to play the piano but never have. That's one thing I'd love to do before I die. Good luck and we'll expect a recital when you come to visit again!!

You are my inspiration to get back playing the piano. I acutally used to be quite good, but quit when I was 14. Now, I struggle with hymns! ugh. thanks for the insight about Suzuki b/c I was thinking of starting Sydney on that b/c she can't read yet, but I will not do that if it doesn't teach you to read music.

You are awesome! I really want to learn to play the piano too. I have to tell you something about Suzuki...that is how I learned to play the violin. I always thought I had an "ear" for music, because I'm not fabulous at reading notes, but I can play it all by ear once I've heard the song and practiced. I think I just realized that it is not a gift..."playing by ear." I think that is how one learns to play using the Suzuki method! Very interesting!!!!

Jessi, Every so often more than I like, when I go to comment on your blog, I can't... I don't know why so now I'm in, I'll comment on this plus others. When our girls were taking piano which was a combo traditional and Suzuki,(the best of both worlds) the teacher REQUIRED that I sit with every lesson. It was hard but it also made all my childhood lessons fall into place. My only piano goal was to play for my own enjoyment at home and church. My most favorite church calling is playing the piano in R.S. and Primary which really helped me maintain my "mediocre" skills which I am more than satisfied with. When you learn something as an adult, you appreciate it more and I'm so glad my girls took lessons.
