Jessi's Big Give

I just watched Sunday's episode of "Oprah's Big Give" and am hooked. This week's challenge was to give away $100,000 in 24 hours. But there were a few catches: 1) They couldn't give anyone cash. 2) They couldn't give any one person more than $500. 3) They couldn't spend more than $10,000 on any one location. I was amazed at what a hard time some of the people had at figuring out how to give away the money. It got me fantasizing about how I would give away $100,000 with those contingencies. And I don't think it would be that hard. My plan would be 10 locations, $10,000 each. Here is what I would do:

1. Give 40 people $250 gift certificates to a grocery store.
2. Take 20 new or expecting mothers from a low income area on a $500/person shopping spree to Babies 'R Us.
3. Buy $10,000 worth of clothes, toys and supplies for women in a domestic abuse shelter.
4. Get $10,000 worth of computers & other technonlogy for an inner-city school.
5. Go to a health clinic in a low income neighborhood and pay $10,000 ($500/person) towards unpaid medical bills.
6. Pay $10,000 worth of outstanding utility bills at the local utility company.
7. Take 20 foster kids on a $500/person shopping spree to Target.
8. Drop off $10,000 worth of furniture, mattresses & home items to a low income neighborhood.
9. Buy $10,000 worth of tickets to an amusement park for kids in inner-city daycare centers.
10. Go to a local college campus and give 200 students $50 gift cards to a nice restaurant.

That would be SO FUN!!!!!

Your ideas are great! You should seriously forward them to the Oprah show and see what comes of it.

Jessi, that is awesome. I don't love Oprah, but I LOVE that show!!!! Seriously, I think it might be the best thing on TV. I couldn't believe the people that were left with money. I thought the girl that bought the flowers did such a cute thing. Anyway, your ideas are fabulous and well thought-out!

What a wonderful list. This shows you are keyed into people's needs. That would be fun to do, to help out so many people in so many different ways. I haven't seen the show, but I think it is a wonderful idea! I can't believe they actually made a TV show that's worthwhile!

Sougns like exactly what should be done with the money. Wouldn't that be fun! I liked the last one.(how original) Each little bit goes a long way.

That's fun to think about. I've thought a lot about what I'd do if I won $100,000, but never how I'd give it away. That's a good way to think!

Your last one (on a college campus) reminds me of the time I came out of a final at the testing center at BYU and people were there handing out chocolate, just to be nice. (It was a little celebration if you did well, or a consolation if you didn't) It was such a little thing, but was really appreciated.
