Gingerbread Fun

On Sunday night our friends, Connie & Dustin, invited us over for dinner and to make gingerbread houses. It was such a fun evening.

There was one surprise though. I imagined that Connie & I would have overseen the house-making while David and Dustin hung out in the other room, away from the noise and the mess. Not so!!! David builds houses for a living, and Dustin has built houses for a living, and they were the gingerbread house builders of the night!! It made me laugh. David was just shy of elbowing the kids of the way and not letting them touch HIS masterpiece. But everyone involved had an awesome time. Connie and I talked and ate caramel popcorn and the children (I mean men and children) built and decorated the gingerbread houses.

We even had face-painting!The final masterpiece. (Which is now being picked at and consumed piece by piece....)

It isn't every day you get to build a gingerbread house! How fun! I do think your house is a masterpiece, by the way.

Oh, it turned out so great!! I love the house! And nice that you got to relax a little while the others did the work! It has been a tradition in my family to decorate Gingerbread houses for a long time!! It is so much fun and makes great memories! (and kids tummy's a little upset from eating all the candy :)

I'm so bad at making those. David and the kids did such a good job! That sounds like a ton of fun.

Excellent architecture! I'm very impressed! We have yet to do gingerbread this year, but I gearing up for it.

So, the caramel was actually quite easy. Only two things: You have to have a candy thermometer, and you have to stir it pretty much constantly until it gets hot enough. (Which can take 15-20+ minutes.)

Then, you dump it in a buttered pyrex. My mistake was turning it out onto the wax paper before it was completely cooled. The edges were fine and didn't stick...just the warm middle.

Another trick I discovered was that it was NOT easy to cut with a knife, but WAS easy to cut with my kitchen shears. Once again though, it may be because I didn't wait long enough for it to cool?

BTW, I used to have your address to send you Christmas Cards...can I get it again?

Thanks!
Good luck!
