Cheater

For those of you who don't follow baseball, last night history was made. Barry Bonds broke Hank Aaron's all-time home run record-- a record he does not DESERVE. Just look at the facts....

  • 5 out of 6 of his best home-run producing seasons were AFTER he was 35. That is unheard of in baseball.
  • In the first ten years of his career (1986-1996) he hit 292 homers. In the second half of his career (1996-2007) he hit 464 homers. No one ramps up by that much as they age.
  • He has ADMITTED to using known performance enhancing drugs.
  • Look at the pictures. Exercise alone doesn't change a lean, svelte build into a bulky, muscular one.

As far as I'm concerned, 755 is still the record to beat. Barry Bonds is nothing more than a big, fat cheater. (And WHY have teams been pitching to him?? He should have been walked for the rest of his career).

I hate it too Jessi...It's not fair to those other great ball players who broke records on their own without the enhancement drugs. It shouldn't be counted as a record!!!

Yes, we feel the same way. Read Jakes blog. :)

Jessi,

NICE TOPIC! Now this is a post that makes me excited. I never would imagine that a member of the relief society would post something like this. You are moving to the top of my list. ;)

That being said . . . Barry Bonds may have "cheated," but it is important to remember that most people agree he is one of the ten best baseball players EVER, with or without "cheating."

A lot of people easily write Barry off because he is a jerk. And he does have one of the worst personalities. I don't think it is fair to only blame Barry. The pitcher that gave up # 755 was banned for some games for testing positive. If the pitchers are cheating and the hitters are cheating then it is a baseball problem, not a Barry problem.

I have no doubt that Barry knowingly took banned substances to break records, get more money, and get a bigger ego and all of that is wrong. I don't know that we can say the record is tainted or that we can take it away from him because MLB is to blame from top to bottom.

I do feel bad for Hank Aaron and no matter what happens people will know that he (supposedly) did it the right way.

I take comfort in knowing someone like Alex Rodriguez who apparently is not "cheating" will eventually break the record.

I understand your feelings but hopefully people will be able to see that a really great player "cheated" to make himself better. And while he should not be congratulated for "cheating," we can't erase his talent and/or records because he is a jerk and because the perception that he is the only one cheating is incorrect.

At this point it is kind of like, "what are you going to do?" There will always be a cloud over Barry and his numbers, which he brought on himself.

Again, nice post! :)

I don't know the first thing about baseball, but it sounds like he cheated for sure!

I with you Jessi. I was at a party Sat and saw him hit 755. but I wasn't about to wait around for him to hit one more.

That's exactly what I thought when I read in the paper that he broke the record. He didn't really brake it. I am disappointed in baseball that after all the drug use publicity, they still are celebrating this record. He's not a very good role model for up and coming baseball players. Hank Aaron still holds the real record. Barry Bonds holds the steroid-induced one.

A reminder of the value of integrity, which is more important than any sports record or business success for that matter. (Job 27:5)

The pictures say it all... and cheaters shouldn't be celebrated.
