I'm a Mormon, yes I am

Living in the heart of the Bible belt, "what church do you go to" is a pretty commonly asked question. And when people ask it they don't necessarily mean to ask what religion you are but what church building or congregation you attend. I usually respond that I go to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints off B* road. My hope is that by hearing the offical name of our church (which includes the name of Jesus Christ) it will emphasize that we are in fact Christians. On the other hand, when I answer that way I get a lot of blank stares and I wonder if people understand that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is "Mormon". Or... maybe the blank stares are because they don't quite know how to respond to someone openly admitting to be something they think is so wrong. In all the years I've lived here I've never had anyone openly attack my religion, but I wonder how other people truly perceive our family and our beliefs. I would hope that as people get to know us that they would see that we do live Christian lives and uphold Christian values (and that they would feel comfortable asking us any questions about what we believe). There are so many myths and stereo-types about our religion, but the one that bothers me MOST is that we are not Christian. I think if people understood that one fact it would change the world's perception of what it means to be Mormon. Am I a Mormon? yes. Am I a Christian? YES!
