I recently re-read a quote book I got when I was a young teenager and discovered this thought by Jack H. Goaslind:
"Our yearnings for happiness were implanted in our hearts by Deity. They represent a kind of home-sickness, for we have a residual memory of our premortal existence. They are also a foretaste of the fullness of joy that is promised to the faithful."
What a wonderful idea! At church on Sunday we talked about the things that make us happy. In every case they were things that brought us closer to God. Much of the world has the idea of happiness mistakenly intertwined with feelings of indulgence, but true happiness is so much easier to come by! It explains why those in near destitute circumstances can still laugh and smile. Happiness is a kind of homing device, and the things that bring us joy are flares along the path.

That is a "mystery" that few people realize. His plan truly is the Great Plan of Happiness!
This reminds me of a comment at your Tuesdays with Morrie book club discussion. When Morrie described a perfect day and what he'd want to do before he died, he described doing simple pleasures with the people he loved. And so the comment was, then every day can be a perfect and happy day. Simple pleasures with the people you love is happiness. I don't want to forget that!
